Dr. Dorothy Smith Receives Honorary Life Membership Award From Canadian Pharmacists Association Dorothy L. Smith, Pharm.D., president and founder of Consumer Health Information Corporation has received the Canadian Pharmacists Association (CPhA) Honorary Life Membership Award for her contributions to pharmacy and long-standing leadership. The award was presented at the CPhA Annual Conference in Niagara Falls, Ontario on May 16, 2004.

Bernd Staeben, President of CPhA’s Board of Directors said, “We are pleased to present this award to Dr. Dorothy Smith for her many contributions to pharmacy and for her long-standing leadership.” She was chosen because of her outstanding service to pharmacy, particularly relating to CPhA.

The Honorary Life Membership Award is conferred on any pharmacist who is or has been an active member of CPhA. In addition, nonpharmacists and nonresidents of Canada, who have contributed to CPhA or the profession nationally, may be considered for the award. CPhA Honorary Life Members are granted all the privileges of active membership but only those Honorary Life Members who are eligible for active membership shall have the right to vote or hold office.

“I am so privileged to be honored by the Canadian Pharmacists Association. I am grateful to CPhA and the Canadian pharmacists who have made it possible for me to pursue a career in patient education,” said Dr. Smith. “I think back to how I got involved in pharmacy at so many different levels and I’m reminded of the CPhA Conference and 1967 Centennial Scholarship that brought me together with pharmacy students across Canada and introduced me to my first CPhA convention.”  She said,

“CPhA treated us royally and I left that conference with the confidence I needed to get involved in national and later international pharmaceutical activities.”

The Canadian Pharmacists Association is the national organization of pharmacists, committed to providing leadership for the profession of pharmacy. It was founded ninety-four years ago in 1907 when 15 pharmacists pooled their resources and formed an organization to present a united front to the federal government on issues affecting their profession. Since that time CPhA has developed a proud history of pharmacists working together to create a movement for their profession. Over the years, more and more pharmacists have added their support to the association and today, after significant changes in corporate structure, that membership is stronger than ever, and growing.
